THE AMERICAN BISON
(Bison bison)

The bison inhabit grassland prairies, aspen parklands and coniferous forests of North America.  They eat grass and herbs.  This is the largest land mammal in North America, and can weigh up to 2,600 lbs.  They were almost exterminated in the last century when populations decreased from 50 million to 1,000 by 1900.  Now there are over 20,000 in national parks and reserves.
