HABITAT
|
Forests
of the pacific coast and inland to the western slopes of the sierra nevada
and Cascade Mountains. Generally found on the floor of the redwood
of spruce-fir forests, where undergrowth is dense. Found Alaska to
California. |

DIET
|
Herbivorous-
browser- leaves and twigs, bark, moss, berries, mistletoe, fungi, acorns
and ferns. |

OTHER FACTS
|
Small dark colored deer: summer pelage (hair) - reddish to reddish
yellow, winter - brownish gray becoming dark along back. forehead,
nose and chest are blackish. Belly, inside legs and ears are white.
Head and body length is about 60 inches with an average weight of 150 to
200 pounds. Ears are broad and short, tail broad at the base and
tapers to the tip, black on the upper surface with white underneath.
Scent gland is on the middle of the hind leg and about 3 inches in length.
Antlers
are shed around January and February and start growing in April out of
velvet in may. The antler tines are branched and have few points.
Fawns
are born between April and July. Twins are common and sometimes a
doe will have three. They are reddish brown with numerous white spots. |
