THE BACTRIAN CAMEL
(Camelus bactrianus)
The bactrian camel inhabits deserts of Mongolian steppes
and Gobi Desert. They eat thorns, dry vegetation and saltbush.
This is the two humped camel, and has been domesticated since 2500BC in
northern Iran and southwestern Turkistan. The humps are composed
of connective tissues and with a high fat content. They weigh about
1,500lbs and live for up to 50 years.
