THE CARIBOU
(Rangifer tarandus granti)
The Caribou inhabits tundra, taiga, and subalpine regiions
and dense, moist coniferous forests of western Alaska. They eat leaves,
herbs, sedges, fungi and lichens. They are also known as Barren Ground
Caribou, the largest of the New World deer. They are also referred
to as "reindeer" in Europe. Bulls live for 6-8 years, while cows
live over 10 years.
A single calf is born after a gestation period of 228
days, and is weaned at 6 months.
