COUGAR
MESAwas captive born in Georgia on June 8th, 1998.  She was hand raised with her brother at a wildlife sanctuary in southern California.  When mesa arrived at Wildlife Safari at 4 months of age, she weighed 25 pounds.  She reached 45 pounds by 7 months.  Mesa should reach 80-95 pounds when fully grown by her 2nd birthday.
Young Cougars are very playful, and their behavior offers practice for the survival skills they needs as adults.  Mesa practices her sense of balance as she walks on rocks, ledges and logs.  She also has many toys to "stalk" and "prey upon."

Cougars are solitary animals.  Adults only come into contact with one another during breeding season, so Mesa is very content to be displayed by herself.  Mesa's caretakers act as her family and spend a tremendous amount of time with her to help ensure her comfort.

Mesa is at Wildlife Safari to help visitors learn more about cougars and the role they play in helping in the balance of the ecosystem.  Mesa travels through the village on daily treks which offer the opportunity for you to see some of the natural instincts and beautiful characteristics of cougars up close.
