Safari Zoo School consists of member schools participating in classroom support programs at Wildlife Safari. Through Zoo School, members have use of the classroom, assistance in planning math and science enrichment activities here at the park for their students, and the use of the online school enrichment network.

The goals for the program include:

  • To develop enthusiasm for the study of math and science,
  • To provide appropriate and exciting school opportunities,
  • To develop a linkage between the community and schools
  • To provide resources to teachers in the classroom
  • To increase the level of instruction in math and science
Even though our goals are centered around math and science, many other classrooms can take advantage of this program.  Many English, History, Geography and others have custom designed their visits.

The methodology follows these basic steps:

1.  A representitive from Wildlife Safari will visit the classroom.  During this visit, the classroom teacher and students conduct a planning session.  The outcome of the session is to determine a plan for the classroom visit to Wildlife Safari for a day of exciting activities.  Normally, the students select 5 animals they would like to visit up close, and the teacher selects 3 concepts that are being covered in the classroom

2.  The classroom teacher follows the standard curriculum guide for the classroom, with the added anticipation of visiting the park to validate the work in the classroom.  The concept is that the anticipated visit will motivate the students to learn the topic scheduled.  Wildlife Safari does not provide curriculum, but can assist the teacher with materials and other resources.

3.  The classroom visits the park as scheduled.  The students conduct activities related to the 3 teacher determined concepts in the areas represented by the 5 animals the students selected.

4.  The classroom conducts a follow up activity in the classroom to review both the experience and how it related to what had been covered in the classroom.
