Hippos range throughout Africa, inhabiting wallows, rivers, lakes near grasslands.  They feed at night and spend the day in the water, where they can stay submerged for up to 5 minutes.  They eat mostly short grasses.  Hippos can weigh from 3,000 to 8,000 lbs.
